The Most Curious Facts about... Hemp

Hemp has been around for ages before we even dreamt of being able to communicate in real time with people from other continents.

Actually, it was around for so long that it was extensively used for sailing ships’ sails and for the canvases of van Gogh and Michelangelo.

By the way, even the word for canvas comes from Cannabis. Interested? I bet there are at least three other things you never knew about hemp…

You don’t want to grow hemp? Go to prison!

While Jamestown and Virginia were still a colonial region, in 1619 the law obliged people to grow hemp. If a farmer declined, then they were going to be prosecuted. Such laws were also approved also in Connecticut, Massachusetts and in Chesapeake.

England -  the mother-colonizer was also one of the countries where not willing to grow cannabis after being asked to would have brought you quite the sentence.

Hemp is what hemp does. Medical marijuana for believers.

Famous for their medicines and cures, American companies Squibb, Park Davis and even Eli Lily produced a great amount of medicaments which included hemp.

This is why medical marijuana seeds is regarded as one of the most controversial cures—it has a history of over 6,000 years as a medicinal herb and a history of a couple of centuries in which the plant has been regulated and/or banned.

Cannabis sativa—one of the hemp diversities that grow in our world, is what our world named “medical marijuana”.

It is accepted as a treatment for more than 200 conditions including Alzheimer’s and Tourette’s. There are over 20 places in the world where patients are able to feel better because of this plant.

Stability like never before!

Hemp fibers have been used as building materials, ropes and even for car-making. Left aside these modern ideas, it was the substance of which canvases and sails for ships were originally made of. This said, do you think Magellan or Columbus would have made their discoveries without a stable ship?

Heat-up the oil! Let’s start the car.

Hemp oil is one of the most natural oils. Just like the peanut butter oils, this vegetable fat is a perfect fuel. Let it burn and see how the diesel engine will purr like a happy kitten. What’s more curious .... well if you are really into this topic, you will find it for yourselves. Walk your own path, do not take my word for granted.

Weed or a miracle? What do you think about this one?

Some people blame it all on the hemp for being a weed and overtaking everything while in fact this is a great example of how strong hemp is. It is mildew-resistant and is almost impossible for it to get a disease.

The very fact that this plant can overtake others, that it can overrule disasters and negatives in the soil… these all show that something is there in it, something that not everyone knows about.

Just as a final thought, there is evidence of hemp being used industrially in China… 10,000 years before our time.
